Andalucia, situated in the south east of Spain is the country´s most populous region. With a total population of some 7 million people. Despite this, it offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire country. This is in great measure due to the presence of the River Guadalquivir. The Guadalquivir starts its life in the Cañada de las Fuentes amongst the mountains of the Sierra Cazorla. As it drops down to the coast, it drifts through the city of Cordoba. Between Cordoba and Sevilla it meanders through lush green orchards, past sleepy little villages, before ending up in the sea south of Sevilla.
From the Balcony of our countryside hotel, we can see a well cared for castle sitting above a village. Surrounding our countryside hotel are orchards. All kinds of fruits are grown here. Along the contour of the River Guadalquivir, a variety of tall trees grow. Animals graze in the fields. The air is clean and fresh. Our hotel room is large, comfortable and has all the things that we need. Downstairs is a restaurant, a large comfortable bar. At the front of the hotel is a pleasant terrace adjacent to the bar. Ideal for a relaxing drink after a day of sightseeing.
Coach travel is so perfect for taking in the pleasures of this delightful area. Our experience starts with a relaxing journey from the Costa Blanca. Carefully selected comfort stops en route add to the experience which culminates in a visit to the little known but extremely interesting town of Ecija. Never, in any other town have we seen such a concentration of spires and towers. Ecija and many of its buildings herald from the Moorish culture which ruled medieval Spain. A short hop from Ecija, sees us at our hotel, sitting on the terrace, sipping a G&T, in the most idyllic of surroundings. Some may even want to have a splash in the hotel´s outdoor pool (seasonal).
The next day sees us on our way to one of the prettiest towns in Spain – Cordoba – Capital of Muslim Spain for almost the entire period of Moorish rule. Yet with a history dating back to and far beyond the Roman occupation. Cobbled streets, horses and carriages, flower filled patios, an old Jewish district which house one of only three medieval Synagogues still standing in Spain. Locally produced leather work and silver Jewellery are in evidence in the shop windows. The whole feeling of Cordoba is one of horses, carriages, Flamenco music and dresses, dark eyed girls with shiny black hair, sallow, rugged, olive skinned young men. In other words real authentic Spain.
It is here that you can visit the breathtaking Mezquita. One of the most original buildings in the world. Once a beautiful mosque. Large parts of the beautiful original mosque have been preserved, but built into this is the grand and ornate cathedral, which was placed after the Christian re-conquest, giving a totally unique building, which is both mosque and cathedral. Nearby is the Alcazar. Used by the Catholic monarchs when they visited the city. A sort of Castle cum place, with beautifully kept gardens.
Leaving the historical centre, you can also spend time in the new city. Here, as in most towns, you will find a range of shops, parks, walkways, and a very good zoo. The river Guadalquivir flows through the town. Its banks offering a green and peaceful location to relax a while.
Then its back to the terrace and the G&T for a nights rest – and perhaps a cool dip in the pool.
Next day we are off to Sevilla. The flamboyant capital city of Andalucia. Home to the regional parliament. Here the river Guadalquivir is at its mightiest as its waters pour towards the sea. The river at this point is large enough to accommodate incoming sea going vessels. Sevilla is a vibrant city. Here you can take a mini cruise on the river.
Use the tourist bus to take in the cities many sights, enjoy a carriage ride through the cities cobbled streets, visit the massive cathedral where Christopher Columbas was said to be interned, Marvel at fabulous views from the height of cathedral tower, visit the "Maenstranza" bull ring - one of the most famous and most attractive bull rings in the entire country. Rest in the shade of the beautiful Maria Luisa park. Watch the world go by in the charismatic "Plaza España", learn about Andalucia in the Museum of Andalucian Culture. Trace the regions history through the archaeological museum. Try the local cuisine in riverside restaurants. Then there is the ALcazar, the patio of oranges, the prison where Cervantes was incarcerated, the football grounds of Betis Real and Sevilla, the Torre de oro and so much more.
Another session with the G&T, the pool and all that goes with it. A nights sleep. Then all aboard for Torrevieja. Again with appropriate comfort stops en route. This excursion is the stuff that dreams are made of and at such an incredibly affordable price.
