Jerez produces Spain´s Sherries and Brandies. It was the towns proximity to the sea that brought about it´s rapid development in the 18th Century when English shippers were searching for alternatives to French wines.
The name Sherry comes from the English spelling of the town´s name XERES, the name first used in 1608. A visit to the González Byass TIO PEPE winery in Jerez will transport you back in time to Jerez in the 19th century, although a fine glass of Tío Pepe sherry will soon bring you back to the present!
The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation, based in Jerez de la Frontera, is known all over the world thanks to its show entitled "How the Andalusian Horses Dance"; a unique exhibition of horsemanship which both exhibits and summarises the work which the institution has carried out since its establishment. This show literally moves some to tears such is the beauty and grace of the horses.
Cadiz is located in southern Spain, in the region of Andalusia. Its coastline is part of the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) and features numerous golden sandy beaches, including everything from beaches in urban areas to extensive, practically unspoilt stretches of sand. In the interior, the popular White Villages Route is highly recommended. Part of the province also lies within the Doñana National Park, and there are also another five nature reserves in Cadiz's exceptional natural environment. Cadiz is also known for its delicious gastronomy, and particularly for its “pescaíto frito” (perfectly-fried platters of assorted fresh fish) and shellfish, ideally accompanied by the wines to be found on the Wine and Brandy routes in the Marco de Jerez region.
The rock of Gibraltar is a gigantic piece of Jurassic limestone which forms a craggy promontory, connected to the mainland of Spain. Gibraltar´s best-known attractions are of course the Barbary Apes or tail-less monkeys that roam freely with their inquisitive and usually friendly natures.
