Caravaca and Calasparra - Fridays

We start our day driving through the scenic Murcian countryside to the very spiritual town of Caravaca.

The old city of Caravaca was taken from the Moors and is essentially a very holy town, the town of the cross that carries its name. Steeped in history, you can lose yourself in the old town wandering along the small winding streets, discovering the delights of the old and new world! The cross is said to be made from the original wood from the cross that Christ himself was hanged. This unique town also holds many festivals including the famous running of the wine horses in May which is a must on any visitors list!

Our morning in Caravaca includes an optional sightseeing journey on the local tourist train ( at a small additional cost ) which takes in the main sights which the town has to offer and also includes a visit to the Basilica of the True Cross for you to admire the interior of one of the countries most important religious sites.

Our next stop on this Murcia Region discovery trip is to Calasparra which enjoys a privileged status as a popular tourist destination due to the many attractions it has on offer such as rivers, reservoirs and a variety of archaeological sites and cave surprises! 

Upon arrival at the Sanctuary we make our way to the restaurant and enjoy a full 3 course meal ( inc wine and water ) and relax in these peaceful surroundings with the just the sound of the River Segura flowing by.  After our meal there is free time to visit the stunning Sanctuary.

One of the most popular places of interest in the Region of Murcia is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope( and Patron Saint of Calasparra ) . The sanctuary is located in a cave carved into the rock and houses 2 images of the Virgin of Hope. One small ( La Pequeñita ) and one large ( el grande ).  The small image, its said, was found by a shepherd who kept his cattle in the cave.  The residents of the town wished to transfer the her to he centre of Calasparra but due to her weight they understood that the Virgin wished to stay in the grotto. 

The actual date and reason in which the larger image appeared is currently unknown. 

At present the Sanctuary is visited by many people from the Region and beyond, who are attracted by the images with her open arms, welcoming all pilgrims who come to her to share with her their joys and hopes.
