Fire, water, gunpowder. Music on the street, parades, joy in abundance. These are some essentials of what Hogueras de San Juan festival is.

Alicante starts the summer officially when the Hogueras de San Juan festivities take place, being the days that go from the 20^th to the 24^th of June the most important ones.

This big festivity, declared as being of International Tourist Interest, has roots in ancient celebrations related to the summer solstice. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits burning old and useless objects.

Currently, the main characters of the festival are gigantic figures made of wood and cardboard that will burn the Night of San Juan. This tradition was born in the last century, when the neighbors took to the street old junk to burn it down and welcome the summer season.

You will have time to visit the hogueras during the late afternoon and take your pics before the evening when they are spectacularly burnt to the ground.
