MSC entered the cruise market in the 1960’s, and is one of the fastest growing cruise companies in the world, using some of the newest vessels currently at sea. This exciting cruise visits some of the most iconic venues on the Mediterranean. After leaving Valencia it sails to France’s second largest city, the city of Marseille. During the heady days of the French Empire this was the main seaport of France. The largest and officially the sunniest major city in France, you could sometimes be forgiven for thinking you had arrived in Paris with familiar names like Sacre Couer, Basilique de Notre Dame, and Arc de triumph being given to some of the city’s land marks. Being a large city there is no shortage of things to see and do, and with the city centre being largely pedestrianised, this is a pleasant experience.

Sailing on from Marseille, our next port of call is Genoa . An intricate maze of narrow streets lead us past palaces, mansions, and museums into charming tree lined squares. Shops which have traded for over a hundred years sit side by side with modern trendy wine bars. A cable car and moving staircase are available to take the adventurous to the higher points. Or for the more sedate, a hop on hop of tourist bus is available.

The next stop Civitavecchia is the port for Rome. The eternal city from which the mighty Romans ruled huge chunks of the ancient world. Loads of things to see here, including a state within a state, the Vatican city, the Coliseum, and the Trevi Fountains. Now a bright, bubbly modern city with masses to see and surprisingly easy to find your way about.

From Rome we move to Palermo Italy. Palermo is Sicily's regional capital, a busy port city on the north-western coast of the island. With some glorious historic buildings, vibrant, scruffy markets and a sunny climate. Palermo also has bohemian boutiques, famously-excellent street food, fine architecture (frequently crumbling) and a lively atmosphere.

Sardinia’s largest city (with a little over 150,000 people) and its capital for centuries, Cagliari on the island’s south coast offers the perfect mix of recreation and exploration options. This is our next Port of call. The five-mile-long Poetto Beach is among the best city beaches on the Mediterranean, and together with the adjacent Marina Piccola, satisfies all manner of sun and sea pursuits. Seekers of culture will love Cagliari’s old district, Castello, where 13th-century towers still guard the medieval city walls. In fact Cagliari's Sardinian name Casteddu literally means castle!

On our second last day we arrive in Palma De Mallorca. Arriving in the afternoon - we have more time in the evening here. Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, in the western Mediterranean. The massive Santa María cathedral, a Gothic landmark begun in the 13th century, overlooks the Bay of Palma. The adjacent Almudaina is a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence. West of the city, hilltop Bellver Castle is a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape. Being an afternoon/evening visit this is an ideal way to finish your holiday on a bit of a buzz.

Sadly all good things come to an end and the next day we find ourselves back where we started in Valencia. But what a wealth of memories we return with.
